Following on from the big news that is Barclay’s ‘flip flop ban’, we got to thinking about other cases in which our beloved flip flops have been banned.
While the banning of flip flops for suit-clad bankers isn’t quite so hard to believe, these other cases are a little more unusual…
This selection of stories will have your flip flops turning in their cupboard.
1) Aussie Airline Quantas
First up is the recent flip flop ban for travelers aboard a Quantas flight. Yes you heard correctly, the Aussie airline, home to the land of flip flop lovers and flip flop clad visitors, has cracked down on ‘dressed down travelers’.
The Australian airline implemented a set of guidelines from April 1st, which reminds passengers using certain airport lounges that they must be dressed in a ‘smart casual’ manner. Therefore passengers wearing vests, shorts, and namely, flip flops, may end up being turned away from Quantas lounge areas. You wouldn’t be blamed for thinking that this only applies to Business Lounges, however the ban extends to domestic Quantas Clubs and has been implemented across Australia’s big airports, including Perth, Sydney and Melbourne.
So there you go, if you’re thinking of going traveling down under then make sure you pack your Sunday best! Oh and needless to say, if you only have flip flops and think removing them entirely will save you from the chop, then think again. Along with flip flops, barefoot is in breach of the rules, and is unacceptable, whatever the weather.
2) Metro Taxi
It seems it’s not only banks that are polishing up on their smart casual image, but taxis too. The famous black cabbie, with its cockney driver, has been subject to talks about banning the drivers from wearing anything ‘too casual and colourful’. The impending ban has a distinctly summary theme, with Hawaiian shirts and flip flops in the main firing line, along with other considered casual items such as shorts and vests.
The drivers themselves aren’t too happy about this, explaining that driving in the summer calls for comfortable and cool casualwear. And anyway, do passengers really care about what the driver is wearing (within reason) as long as they get you safely from A to B?
3) Capri, Italy
Okay so we’ve heard about flip flop bans in airports and certain professions where people are dealing with the public, but have you ever heard about an entire island banning flip flops?!
Enter Capri, an island and popular tourist destination in Italy’s Gulf of Naples.
Noted as one of the world’s strangest laws, it’s illegal here to wear excessively noisy footwear (particularly flip flops) as locals value their ‘peace and quiet’ so! And just to prove its existence, a couple were arrested while holidaying here for doing just this! Definitely not a place to take wellies then…
These three cases illustrate flip flop bans in unlikely circumstances. The moral of the story is that flip flops can unfortunately land you in a spot of trouble, and potentially arrested so it would seem. In other words, they’re great fun and should be worn by those who enjoy living dangerously! Or just those who want to keep their feet cool and stylish in warm conditions.
